Background

My life ran quite calm in Biasca, a little town in Ticino, one of the cantons in the Switzerland, until I came to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. Here I studied Computer Science and got a Master Degree (M. Sc.) in 1996 a well as a Doctoral Degree (Dr.) in 2001.

During my studies, I specialised in system software and hardware architecture. In my Diploma Thesis, I implemented an Oberon Cross-Compiler for the M68HC11 Microcontroller. Having seen the interesting research fields at the ETH, I decided not to go away and to apply for a Ph. D. The idea was to complement my knowledge by moving to the area of Information Systems.

I worked as a teaching assistant at the Institute for Information Systems in the group Global Information Systems of Prof. Dr. Moira C. Norrie. My dissertation-project was called OMX-FS: An Extended File System based on the Generic Data Object Model OM. The underlying idea of this project is to modify and extend the current vision of the file system, viewing it in terms of collections of logical documents on which typical database concepts, such as queries, can be applied and dependencies between files can be specified and managed. In this way, the system offers higher-level user support for both the organisation and management of all forms of computer-stored information and work activities.

After finishing my dissertation, I continued to work as project manager in the same group on a project called Universal Information Platform (UIP). The aim of this platform is to introduce a multi-user, distributed and persistent information exchange system. The UIP architecture design is based on the experience gained during my Ph. D. study, working on OMX-FS.

October 23, 2003 was my last working day at the ETH Zürich. The first of January 2004 I began at ELCA as Senior Software Engineer. I was responsible for the database maintenance at a well-known Swiss bank. After six months, I had the opportunity to work for a smart company. Therefore I switched and since the first of July 2004 I am working at Ergon. You can have a look and find more information about my projects at Ergon here.
